August

A military coup overthrew President Taya in Mauritania; a peace agreement was signed between the government and GAM rebels in Indonesia; Israel began the withdrawal (15 August-12 September) of settlers and military forces from the Gaza Strip; Pierre Nkurunziza became President of Burundi

September

An agreement was reached at talks over North Korea's nuclear program; elections in Germany resulted in a CDU/SPD coalition; the IAEA found Iran to be in noncompliance with the NPT; in elections in Poland the PiS and PO parties defeated the SLD
